“Penghayat” is a term for those who choose a belief system as a way of life, other than embracing the six religions recognized by the Indonesian government. Although it has actually existed for a long time, the status of penghayat kepercayaan is only considered equal to other citizens in Indonesia since the release of Constitutional Court Decision number 97/PUU-XIV/2016. Thanks to this legal basis, the existence of various penghayat groups has become more pronounced. Thanks to the decision of the panel of judges, the religion column in the ID card can be filled with the phrase ‘penghayat kepercayaan’.
